How A Black Man Feels (1991)

  • Referenced by Ice-T as “the first gangsta rapper”, Schooly D released his fifth installment to his gangsta-bravado rap repertoire in the form of How A Black Man Feels. Released under Capitol Records, the album featured hits such as “Original Gangster”, “Where'd You Get That Funk From”, and “King of New York”.

Three iconic albums came out on this day in Hip-hop, and a retrospect look qualifies a break from the mainstream at acknowledging the rap minds behind these memorable magnum opus'.

 

Blowout Comb (1994)

  • Acclaimed rap group Digable Planets launched their second studio album, which notably showcased the group taking a dive into more stripped-down, minimalistic sounds, and also featured appearances from Jeru the Damaja, DJ Jazzy Joyce, and Guru of Gang Starr. Though a lack of support and promotion led to a decline in their chart listings, many critics alluded the album as “a textured soundscape of a mythical world of rhymes, jazz, and urban ambience”, and agreed to both the album's formidability as well

It's not news to say that Drake is popular, but sometimes you need a little perspective to understand just how popular the Canadian rapper, singer, and actor is. Lupe Fiasco announces delay of all 3 upcoming albums

Last April Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco announced that he was in the process of creating three brand new albums, all of which were supposed to be released before the end of 2016. Today, Fiasco announced that due to mixing and legal issues, the release of all three albums will be shelved until at least 2017.

Mobb Deep's Prodigy hopes his new book will inspire prison reform

It's not everyday you hear of someone writing a cook book with the goal of making the world a better place, but that's exactly what Mobb Deep's Prodigy hopes to accomplish with his book of prison recipes.

Prodigy served a three year stint in state prison following a weapons conviction in 2007. The rapper suffers from sickle cell anemia, a condition which he says was worsened by the food served in prison, which Prodigy told Billboard was"... like slop. There’s glass and all sorts of crazy stuff in the food.” The rapper had to ask his family to send him vegetables in order to maintain his health, and he's hoping his new book, Commissary Kitchen: My Infamous Prison Cookbook, which is equal parts cook book and memoir, will not only teac

Tech N9ne: Are You Ready for “The Storm”

Locked and loaded for his forthcoming album, The Storm, rapper Tech N9ne recently unveiled the album's 20-track list.

Scheduled for release on December 9, the album features a sizable amount of content divided into three parts, all reflecting different facets in the rapper's style. “Kingdom” can be characterized with a more contemporary vibe, as the second part “Clown Town” transitions into a darker tone. Finally, “G. Zone” takes a step into the life of a gangster.
