Albuquerque-based emcee Wake Self pays homage to his favorite classic hip-hop albums in an incredible new video for the track "Still Love Her" from his upcoming album, Malala. The intro features J Dilla's mother Ma Dukes telling listeners to "educate yourself/be about it," then fades into Wake Self injecting titles and lyrics of revered hip-hop classics into the track. From Common's Resurrection and A Tribe Called Quest's The Low End Theory to De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising and Ice Cube's Death Certificate, "Still Love Her" is a strong testament to Wake's intense love for hip-hop culture.
"I feel a deep attachment, however, to classic hip-hop music," Wake says. "I feel like we as a culture need to start recognizing our heroes and teachers like other cultures and music genres do."
Directed by Phillip Torres of Explore Media and animated by Josh Goble, "Still Love Her" captures the spirit of the Golden Era while Wake lends it an undeniable freshness with his yearning for a revolution. It also features Miles Bonny on horns, DJ Young Native on the cuts and drummer Emilio Semihazah.
"We shouldn't have some of the pioneers barely able to pull a big audience,"he says. "We should have our pioneers playing coliseums like Guns-N-Roses, Black Sabbath or other older artists of different genres. I feel we need nurture our culture and give it its proper respect."
"Still Love Her" takes the listener on a walk down hip-hop's memory lane in a way that shows respects to the greats who laid the foundation, but also educates those who may not have such a solid grasp on the history of the culture.
