According to a recent press release, Vince Staples will release his upcoming EP, Prima Donna, on August 26th. It will feature production from James Blake, No I.D., DJ Dahi, and it will include guest appearances from A$AP Rocky and Kilo Kish.
Furthermore, it was announced that the six song EP will be released with an accompanying short film directed by Nabil, the director of videos for artists such as Kanye West, Frank Ocean, and FKA Twigs. Information regarding the content of the film has not yet been made available.
Beginning on August 19th, the Long Beach emcee will begin taking preorders on his website for a special vinyl edition of the EP. Only 5,000 copies of the special edition will be pressed, so you should definitely jump on that as soon as possible if you want one.
Prima Donna will function as the followup to Staples' critically acclaimed, debut studio album, Summertime '06.Powered by singles “Norf Norf” and “Seniorita,” that 2015 release helped establish Staples as a major player in the hip hop world.
Information about the forthcoming EP first surfaced during an interview with Fader, however, Staples has been loath to directly talk about Prima Donna. Nonetheless, its been characterized as a “chaotic fusion of warped soul, distorted hooks, and extraterrestrial demonic spirituals,” as the six track cadre of songs starts of with “a rap star killing himself and concludes with him first coming to fame.”
It definitely seems as though the EP will function as a continuation of the themes explored in Staples' discography thus far. The track list for Prima Donna can be seen below, and one of its tracks, “War Ready,” recently appeared in the HBO television series “Ballers.”
