Ice-T, Chuck D and Grandmaster Caz are scheduled to perform at the Sundance Institute's annual Celebration of Music in Film on January 21 in Park City, Utah.
Their performances are to celebrate Ice-T's documentary "Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap," co-directed by Andy Baybutt, which examines the craft and skill of the music with input from Afrika Bambaataa, Nas, Mos Def, Eminem, Chuck D, KRS-One, Run-DMC, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg.
It is the first time rap has been featured at the event, which in recent years has seen Lou Reed, Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt and Patti Smith headline. Sundance Film Music Program director Peter Golub and Lionsgate's head of film music Tracy McKnight program the event.
In addition, the Sundance Institute will, for the first time, present live music nightly in the Park City, Utah, art gallery space converted into the ASCAP Music Café concert hall for afternoon performances. At least two musicians will perform nightly, a mix of singers with music in films being shown at the festival and composers, Golub says. The schedule is still being finalized.
"Over the years people wanted to perform so they'd try to get booked at parties, which are isolated events. It made more sense to have a central performance space," says Golub tells Billboard.com.
BMI and ASCAP will both be represented, ASCAP with its Music Café presenting music each afternoon and BMI with its "Music & Film: The Creative Process" roundtable at 11 a.m. Jan. 25 and the Snowball that night featuring performances by Donovan, Dawes, Zach Heckendorf and a special guest.
Among the roundtable participants are Golub and director Katie Aselton, who collaborated on "Black Rock"; composer Ryan Beveridge and director Aurora Guerrero ("Mosquita y Mari"); composer Alec Puro and director Jonathan Kasdan, ("The First Time"); composer T. Griffin and director Marshall Lewy, ("California Solo"); composer Michael Bacon ("Slavery by Another Name"); composer Miriam Cutler ("Ethel"); composer Cliff Martinez ("Arbitrage"); composer Andrew Hollander ("Sleepwalk With Me"); director Malik Bendjelloul ("Searching for Sugar Man"); composer Heather McIntosh and director Craig Zobel, ("Compliance") director and composer Terence Nance ("An Oversimplification of Her Beauty") and composer and Sundance Composers Lab advisor Blake Neely. Doreen Ringer Ross, vice president, Film/TV Relations at BMI, will moderate.
