This week's Artist Spotlight is the one and only Action Bronson, the multi-talented chef, TV show host, rapper, and professional bringer of unpopular, controversial statements. With his unique style and attitude, both on and off the mic, Action Bronson has emerged as one of hip hop's most unique acts.
Well known for his mix of a Ghostface Killah-esque style stream of consciousness type flow with some savage, laugh out loud insults and smacktalk, Action Bronson is well known for being one of the most entertaining -- and NSFW -- rappers out there.
While he's not afraid to court controversy, the Queens rapper says his sardonic, often vulgar lyrics weren't created solely for the purpose of inciting shocked guffaws or bullying easy targets, it's about keeping things light and building listeners up with humor. "I'm not that type of person. I don't put people down. I build people up," Bronsonresponded when Pitchfork asked him about his comedic though often crude lyrics. "That's how I always wanna be looked at. Sometimes I don't have the best taste with words, but sometimes it's needed to get my point across. I don't like things being too real because that’s boring, and it's going to be depressing. It's all about getting a rise, like, "Oh fuck, I can't believe he just said that, you kidding?" It ain't about making people feel bad or being distasteful with women. That's just not me."
Nowadays, Bronson hosts the Viceland web series "Fuck, That's Delicious," where the artist blends his love of music and food -- he used to be a professional chef before he started rapping full time -- into one of the most unique culinary shows ever made. He recently debuted his latest single, "DuRag vs. Headband," on which the Queens rapper further demonstrates his mastery of the melodic non-sequitur, on the show. Bronson is currently working on two more projects, a mixtape entitled Blue Chips 7000 and a studio album called Human Highlight Reel, neither of which has a release date yet but Bronson has teased that both are coming very soon.
Despite his success on the camera and on the mic, Bronson says his ultimate goal is to further combine his two passions by creating a food truck that also doubles as a stage, so he can perform live and cook for people simultaneously. It's a strange idea for sure, but it's not an implausible dream; after all, Action Bronson has made a career out of doing things that other people thought were crazy, and it's worked out well for him so far.
